The object of blackjack is to beat the dealer's hand by either getting closer to 21 than the dealer, or by having a higher total score than the dealer without going over 21. The cards are worth their face value, except for aces which are worth either 1 or 11 points, depending on what is advantageous for the player.
To start playing, you first need to place a bet. The minimum bet is usually $1, but it can vary depending on the casino you're playing at. Once you have placed your bet, you are dealt two cards face up and the dealer is dealt two cards face down. You then have a few choices:
Hit: Take another card from the deck.
Stand: End your turn and keep the cards you have.
Double Down: Double your bet and receive one more card.
Split: Split your hand into two separate hands if both cards are of the same rank (e.g., Ace-Ace). Play each hand as normal and receive one more card for each hand.
Insurance: If the dealer has an ace showing, you can take insurance which is essentially a side bet that pays 2-1 if the dealer gets blackjack (meaning that their two cards add up to 21). Taking insurance is not always recommended as it's a bad investment most of the time, but it's up to you whether or not to take it.
Once both players have either stood or hit as necessary, the dealer reveals their hidden card and compares it with each player's total score. The player with the highest total score wins unless they go over 21 (in which case they lose automatically), in which case the second-highest total scorer wins. If there is a tie, then it reverts back to whichever player has had least amount of recent hits i.e., taking further cards from the deck).
